If you're already posting on Instagram or Facebook and people message you, it's reasonable to wonder if you need anything else. The short answer: it depends on which problem still isn't solved. Social media does certain things well — and there are others it simply can't do, by how the platform works.
What Social Media Does Well
If you sell something visual — food, baked goods, clothing, finished construction or remodeling work — Instagram is a solid showcase. It's free to start, you already have followers who know you, and you can answer questions directly by message. For a business just starting out, that's often enough on its own.
What Social Media Doesn't Do
The issue isn't your content — it's how the platform works.
You Don't Show Up in Google Search
If someone types "bakery near me" or "electrician in Clifton NJ" directly into Google, they won't find you through Instagram. Google doesn't index social posts the way it indexes a website. That whole search — from someone who doesn't know you exist yet — passes you by.
You Don't Control Who Sees It
The algorithm decides how many of your followers see each post, and that changes without notice. A website is yours — it doesn't depend on a platform deciding to show it or not.
The Same Questions, Over and Over
If people message you every day asking your hours, your address, or how much something costs, that's a sign: that information should live somewhere people can find it themselves, without messaging you first.
"Instagram is the storefront for people who already follow you. A website is the door for people who don't know you exist yet, but are already searching for you on Google."
So Which One Do You Need?
For most local businesses, the answer isn't choosing one — it's using each for what it's good at. Social media to show your work and stay in touch with people who already know you. A dedicated page so the people who don't know you yet can find you on Google, and so you stop repeating the same answers every day.
